Human Beings and Ugly Teddy Bears.
Human beings, in general, really like to show off.
This is a behavior not so hard to be seen among us. Whether it’s smart and subtle, or even full-on bragging, showing off is not something uncommon. Some even consider it necessary for survival. Hah.
So I was having a lunch date with my best friend at this pizza parlor in Bandung, when this young lady suddenly went nuts searching for her cellphone. Oops. I mean, blackberry.
“Oh my God, where’s my Blackberry?” she said in a near-panic tone.
“Calm down, sweetheart, it’s probably in your MacBook case” her friend chimed in.
Oh for God’s sake. Why can’t they just simply said cellphone and laptop? I mean, have we really arrived at a point where we can’t even left off those kinds of details?
Or should I start saying “damn it, where’s my cheap-second-hand-two hundred thousand rupiah-monophonic ringtoned nokia cellphone?”
Huh. Take that, young lady!
Can we just simply call things as they are, not as how high they are? Man, I just hope one day I do not turn out being like that lady.
Speaking of calling things as they are, when he was three my little brother Dylan bought an ugly teddy bear. And I meant it, it was uuglay! So when he asked my dad to name him, he simply looked at the teddy bear and said “well, how bout Kotu? Kotu has a nice ring to it, don’t you think, kids?” and we all agreed. Kotu became a part of the family, even until now.
Six years later, when I enrolled in a Turkish-founded high school, I found out what Kotu really means. And guess what, people?
It means ugly.
